They were on time, (actually early, but called first to see if it was alright to come earlier than the time we had talked about. His crew was courtieous and they were done in about 90 minutes. I'll say this up front for those skimming the listings - I could have taken a chance and hired a junker with a pick-up truck (or smaller dump-truck) or even stopped one of the junkers who troll the alley regularly and possibly saved some money off Able's flat volume-based rate. BUT after seeing all of the stuff that came out of the house and just how much space it took up, it was absolutely worth the money. Able's workers are pros, the company is insured, and the truck is the biggest in the business, which reduces any risk of multiple trips or not finishing in one day. Also, for a flat-rate, Able brought 6 guys (5 in the house, one packing the truck) rather than skimping on labor and try to do it with 2-4, which would have been impossible with the bigger items. This is a quality service and really contributed to my peace of mind. Now here's the rest of the story... My wife and I bought a typical brick 2-flat in Chicago with an unfinished basement. The place is in fairly rough shape, but the biggest challenge (aside from the pervasive smoke smell) was the amount of junk and debris left behind by the previous owner. I have to give her credit - she got out 95% of the stuff, but when the place was 110% full, that still left a lot of stuff. To be fair, we also contributed to the mess with some renovations (removal of fake brick, which was heavy and tore off plaster when removed). Unflinchingly, Able hauled it all away in 4 hours. Paul and his crew couldn't have been nicer and more professional. They are a bunch of moving/junk removal guys, so I expected them to be a little rough around the edges, but they were only so in a good way - they weren't afraid to get dirty and work hard. They were very polite and would quickly step aside with an "excuse me" if I was walking through (although I was mostly trying to stay out of their way). Paul and Aaron were there with the truck about 20 minutes early and the other 4 guys showed up about 5 minutes prior to the start time, 7:30 a.m. I walked them through the house quickly, noting the 2 rooms where I had isolated all of the stuff that was staying. I definitely recommend pre-sorting the junk from anything you want. Sorting takes time and having it done really helped get to work right away (and saved money). After the walk-through, they set to work and cleared the back yard in about 10 minutes. Next they went straight up to the 2nd floor apartment where there was literally TONS of stuff - an old refridgerator, 2 gas space heaters that had to weigh 200-250 lbs each, a stove, and dozens of cans of other debris. With all of the stairs and the bulky items, the 2nd floor took the longest, but with only 2 breaks they moved through it along with the 1st floor (quick) and then the basement, which was pretty full. If you can't tell, I was very happy with their work. They also were very polite to my neighbors. They had to put the truck in the alley, which blocked some garages. But anytime a neighbor came out, they just moved it (or their personal vehicle) out of the way. They also had to pull completely out of the alley at one point to let a streets and sanitation garbage truck through, which they were totally professional about even though it was literally 5 minutes before the job would have been completely done.
